Yes: every American Heart Association CPR and BLS certification expires two years from the date on your card. If you are asking because yours is coming due (or already lapsed), here is exactly how renewal works and how to get current again quickly.
How do I find my expiration date?
Check your AHA card or eCard; the recommended renewal date is printed on it. If you took your class with us, it expires two years from your class date. Lost the card? The AHA eCard system lets you look it up, or call us at (707) 592-9749 and we can help you figure out where you stand.
What happens if my card lapses?
The AHA does not have an official grace period, and most healthcare employers treat an expired BLS card as a compliance issue immediately: some suspend clinical duties until you renew. The good news is that the fix is fast. At ABC Health & Safety Training, initial and renewal students take the same BLS class, so even if your card expired months ago you can be recertified in a single three-hour session.
Is a renewal class different from the initial class?
At many training centers, no; the class covers the full curriculum either way, which keeps your skills genuinely sharp rather than rubber-stamping a card. Guidelines also evolve, so a renewal class is where you pick up what changed since your last certification.
Can I renew online?
Partially. The AHA’s HeartCode program lets you complete the coursework online, but you still must demonstrate skills in person; that is what our HeartCode BLS hands-on session is for. Fully online “renewals” that skip the in-person skills check are generally not accepted by employers.
When should I book my renewal?
Aim for the month before your card expires. Our classes run on alternating Saturdays with weekday evening options in Vacaville, and most students book a week or two ahead. If you trained with us before, watch your inbox: we send certification reminder emails as your expiration date approaches so renewal never sneaks up on you.
Renewing early vs late: how the dates work
Your new card runs two years from your renewal class date, not from your old expiration date. Renewing two or three weeks early costs you a few days of overlap; letting a card lapse can cost you shifts. For anyone whose employer audits certifications, booking the month before expiration is the sweet spot.
Frequently asked questions about renewal
My card expired months ago. Can I still take the renewal class?
Yes. At ABC Health & Safety Training the initial and renewal BLS class is one and the same, so there is no penalty track for a lapsed card; you simply take the class and walk out current again.
I lost my card and do not know my expiration date. What now?
AHA eCards can be looked up online through the AHA verification site. If you certified with us, call (707) 592-9749 and we can help you work out when you trained.
Is a HeartCode blended certification accepted like a classroom one?
Yes. HeartCode online coursework plus an in-person skills session produces the same official AHA BLS Provider card employers require. Just make sure the skills portion is done in person; that is the part fully-online providers skip.
